Independent journalist, who was a victim of an arbitrary detention in April, has already waited three months in jail for a court date
Juliet Michelena Diaz, an independent journalist that works for the Cuban Network of Community Communicators in Havana, has been in jail since April 7th after being accused of an attempted assault.
The request of her lawyer, Orlando Zamora Castillo, for an injunction, has been rejected by the District Attorney, which ensures that Juliet Michelena will remain in prison for the time being. Furthermore, he has written in her defense that it is impossible to prove that Juliet committed the alleged crime and that there are witnesses who claim she was in a different place at the time than the location where the crime supposedly took place. Already in April, the organization Reporters without Borders condemned her arrest and deemed it arbitrary in nature.
The lawyer has presented an appeal of complaint against this resolution. However, the Cuban Network of Community Communicators is afraid that these documents have not been officially introduced, due to a lack of signatures and official stamps, as well as other errors and amendments.
The NGO People in Need wants to express their concerns about the case of Juliet Michelena, which exemplifies the rise in cases of repression against independent journalists that have been taking place over the last few months on the island, in particular against the Hablemos Press news agency and other groups of journalists, such as the Cuban Network of Community Communicators, that participate in this active form of independent journalism in Cuba.
